Documents required for citizens of:

 

United States of America......

 

American citizens who wish to be married in Italy must obtain the documents listed below and follow the procedure described:

American passport or American Armed Forces identification card

A sworn statement by parents or legal guardian(s) consenting to the marriage if the American citizen is under 18.


A birth certificate showing names of both parents.


A declaration, sworn to by the American citizen at the appropriate Consulate or Embassy, stating that he/she is free to marry. Bring your passport or military ID and, if applicable, final divorce decree, annulment decree, or death certificate to the appropriate American Consulate to make the declaration.


The above-mentioned declaration must be taken to the local Ufficio Legalizzazioni of the Prefettura for certification.

A second declaration (ATTO NOTORIO) is required:

IF YOU ARE IN THE U.S.: go to the nearest Italian Consulate with four witnesses who must be over 18. For information refer to the Italian Embassy at 1601 Fuller Street N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009, tel. (202) 328-5500;


Civil banns (pubblicazioni) at the Commune are required if one of the parties is Italian or if the U.S. citizen is a resident of Italy. They must be posted for two weeks including two consecutive Sundays. The civil ceremony is performed at the City Hall at the presence of two witnesses and an interpreter.


AN ALIEN DOES NOT BECOME A U. S. CITIZEN THROUGH MARRIAGE TO AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. He/she should apply for an immigrant visa at the American Consulate General in Naples, Piazza della Repubblica, tel. (081) 5838111.
